About the Disaster

Natural Disaster (Ultracargo)

Aurora: A Child's Journey is based on a real natural disaster located in Santos - SP, Brazil.

Fire at Ultracargo in Santos: The biggest environmental impact resulting from a fire in the history of Brazil

What caused the fire?

The fire at Ultracargo in Santos started on April 2, 2015 in both gasoline and ethanol tanks. The tanks that were consumed were the responsibility of the company Tequimar – Terminal Químico de Aratu, a subsidiary of Ultracargo.

The fire started at the company's fuel transfer center. Due to an operational error, the discharge and suction pipes were operating closed, which caused a valve to explode.

How many days did the fire last?

The fire started around 10 am on April 2nd and was only extinguished on April 10th. For 9 days the flames consumed the tanks with flammable material.

The environmental impacts of the fire

The billions of liters of salt water used in combat ended up returning to the estuary. Causing the death of 7 tons of fish, of 142 different species, 15 of which are endangered.

Residents around the fire reported problems such as respiratory complications and the dreaded acid rain. The flames reached 60 meters in height and it was possible to see the smoke from the fire from the cities.

Consequences

The company was fined BRL 22.5 million and on May 15, 2019, 4 years after the fire in Santos, an agreement worth BRL 67.3 million was signed between the Public and Federal Ministry. However, media coverage of the case was almost nil, thus giving the existence of the game Aurora: A Child's Journey.

About Aurora

Aurora: A Child's Journey was developed as a project to give visibility to an event that had little coverage

The choice to use a child was to show the weight of innocence of someone who didn't know what was going on.

The team sought to focus the public on our own actions in relation to the environment.
